Not making money as a YouTube partner? Here are some tips from YouTube itself

YouTube hosted a live event today to help partners get the most out of their YouTube revenue.

Phil Farhi of YouTube, began the event by telling partners about a few of the new initiatives that YouTube is working on, to help make partners as successful as possible. He started by bringing us through the history of advertising on YouTube.

Phil mentioned that just 3 short years ago, YouTube began using in-video and overlay ads, the first step in monetizing videos. And following the first format of ads, YouTube brought Ad Sense ads, enabling smaller advertisers/customers to get on board, allowing YouTube to capture a broader range of advertisers.

Next came in-Stream Ads (mid and pre-roll ads), a format that was launched about two years ago. YouTube said this has been popular because advertisers will pay more for ads that are similar to the format on TV. At almost the same time, promoted ads were introduced and it was proven to drive traffic to videos that were featured using the ‘promoted video’ format.

A few months ago, a new ad format for partners called TrueView was rolled-out. This format lets users watching a video skip the ad after five seconds. An ad format that YouTube says is less interruptive and doesn’t risk annoying your audience because it gives them the chance to hit stop.

Phil asked the question “ What makes a movie a successful?” Using the movie industry as an analogy, he went on to explain that there are many factors that come into play that make up the overall picture; ticket prices, seats filled, distribution etc. It’s the same with YouTube as he pointed out. Partners shouldn’t look at one aspect such as RPM (revenue per thousand page views) or CPM (cost per thousand, as an example $1 or $5 per thousand views), they should look at everything including geography.

A few points to take away

Good partners focus on overall revenue and aren’t fixated on “ticket price”. They also work hard at building a strong audience as well as trying to increase views. Good partners look at geography, RPM and CPM.

Bad partners look at the wrong metrics and don’t build up their audience. Partners who only focus on RPM might think everything is fine however, it’s critical that users concentrate on CPM as well and continue to build audience loyalty.

YouTube says advertisers are creating content that competes with user content, and millions of users are watching advertisements on the site. Think about the popularity of Superbowl ads.

Keep experimenting! Compare ad formats by type and geography and play around with different scenarios. Try enabling ads after your loyal audience has seen them or try it in reverse. Play with different recipes and see what happens when ad formats are enabled/disabled. There is a wide variety of ways to make revenue.

Take a good look at revenue break downs and compare formats; True View, in-Stream, etc.

Better reporting for ad formats coming soon. YouTube admits that partners don’t have the best reporting feature right now.

YouTube will be adding an option for partners to opt-in to just TrueView Ads without needing to be signed up with other formats.

Ensure the metadata on videos have the correct information and enough words to help YouTube’s algorithm bring the best targeted ads to your videos

web internet marketing

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas ended yesterday with a bang, not a whimper. Drawing more than 140,000 attendees to the Las Vegas Convention Center, the show was back to its pre-recession size. More than a trade show, CES has become a spectacle. Each of the 2,700 vendors tried to outdo the others, with bigger booths, splashy tech gear, and marketing tricks such as giveaways and booth babes. Here’s a sample of the show’s scenery, from beginning to end. Our top photo shows off the beauty of Microsoft’s newest Surface touchscreen table, which will be built by Samsung and sold for $7,600. The hands belong to Microsoft’s Surface exec, Chip Wood.

Panasonic wins the award for the over-the-top booth. Anyone care to guess how much electricity this one consumes, even if the TVs are billed as energy efficient? Still, it was cool to see so many pretty TVs.

Google’s Android 3.0 mobile operating system and 4G LTE wireless service were in the air, from the beginning to the end of the show.

The Nvidia folks tied me up and forced me to appear in this picture, which features two warriors from World of WarCraft. I wasn’t scared.

Marketing the old fashioned way. This company in the South Hall of the sprawling Las Vegas Convention Center was one of many that used the combo of sex appeal and contests. Here, Miss Playboy Club from the Palms hotel picked a raffle winner.

Gary Shapiro (left), president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, has written a book called The Comeback about how innovation will restore the American dream.

Smart meters like this one can bring the internet into your thermostat. Not only does it tell you how to cool your house, it reports back on your usage and the efficiency of your energy usage.

LG Electronics debuted its ThinQ line-up of smart appliances, including this web-connected washer and dryer. You can download new laundry cycles. and the device can help you lower your electricity bill as it figures out the most appropriate time to do laundry.

Seeker Technology unveiled its pipSqueak Bluetooth device that helps you screen calls. You can attach it to your clothing and check to see who is calling you. You don’t have to immediately pull your phone out of your pocket or your purse.

TVs are getting thinner, sharper, and web-connected. More than half of models can display in stereoscopic 3D.

Toshiba had its, uh, marketing women ready at the Tao Nightclub event in the Venetian hotel, where it unveiled its glasses-free TV and laptop.

Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini gets credit for the mega boasts of the show. He said Intel had more than 500 design wins for computers based on Intel’s new Core microprocessors, code-named Sandy Bridge, which combine a microprocessor and graphics on the same chip. He said that Sandy Bridge chips would likely lead to more than$125 billion in computer industry sales in 2011.

Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, went long on his presentation. But he saved a whopper for the end. He said Nvidia is working on a high-end microprocessor based on the ARM architecture. This chip will be able to run a future version of Windows, breaking Intel’s near-monopoly on Windows chips.

Sony pulled out the coolest stars at the show. Seth Rogen and Jay Chou, the stars of the upcoming film The Green Hornet, showed up on stage in a car with twin machine guns on its hood. They chatted with Howard Stringer, (right), the whimsical CEO of Sony, who likes 3D TV so much that he kept his glasses on even after the presentation of 3D was over.

Sony’s new 3D glasses looked cool. But is this a new version of dressing up the pig? Some people still don’t see the value of 3D, even though the marketing departments of the tech giants are in overdrive.

We’re suckers for album cover art. Sony’s new Music Unlimited cloud-music service finally got the green light to launch in the U.S. Sony TV and gadget users will be able to access it via internet connections and discover new music.

Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, said at the opening keynote that future versions of Windows would run on ARM chips. That’s a nod toward smartphones and tablets. But is the move coming too late, given the success of Apple and Google in mobile?

Asus showed off a dual-screen laptop computer that had glass where there is normally a keyboard on a laptop. But if you want, you can open a virtual laptop on the bottom screen and type as if it were a laptop.

It’s going to be a broadband world. Lowell McAdam, chief operating officer of Verizon, said that 4G LTE networks will give users multiple megabits a second data speeds. Those wireless networks will in turn fuel the growth of Android-based products such as Motorola’s Atrix 4G phone. Meanwhile, Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg said that some fiber-optic broadband network subscribers are getting as much as 150 megabits a second service to the home.

Yep. Lowell McAdam, COO of Verizon Wireless, wants to conquer the world.

The Motorola Atrix sports the Google Android software, and its bright screen can do important things like display games.

Small and colorful are in fashion. Kodak came up with a bunch of small camcorders and digital cameras, including the big yellow waterproof model.

Intel’s booth had this inexplicable puzzle, but it sure looked pretty.

Intel also showed off some cool-looking touch screens that touted its Core microprocessors.

The crowds were huge this year. Forget about trying to get a Starbucks Mocha or a burger for lunch.

B.K. Yoon, a Samsung executive who gave one of the keynote talks, promoted “human digitalism,” which focuses on the human side of technology that really makes our lives better.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive of DreamWorks Animation, comes back every year to tout 3D viewing. And guess what? This year is the year of 3D again. So Jerry says.

B.K. Yoon of Samsung set off some digital fireworks in the background to show off Samsung’s theatrical 3D sound system.

Car computers were back in force at CES. Putting a cool car in a booth is the next-best thing to the booth babe when it comes to CES exhibits.

Yes, showgirls are techies too. Here’s the proof, though I have no idea what she was hawking.

Yep, Motorola is back as the tip of the Android spear, which is pointed right at Apple. Motorola’s Atrix 4G and its Xoom tablet were hot tickets this year.

Every year, someone has to claim they have the world’s largest TV. Here’s Samsung said its 75-inch model was the world’s largest full HD LED TV with 3D viewing.

Stantum showed off software for touchscreens that allows you to write on them even if your hand is touching the surface.

Monster Cable always has the biggest marketing budget. The company’s concert performers this year were Earth Wind & Fire. Hewlett-Packard captured the performance in 3D and streamed it live to a huge stereoscopic 3D screen. The system used a wide camera with 19 imaging engines and 12 synchronized projectors.

Out on the Las Vegas strip, Michael Jackson was still alive. In digital form, Ubisoft’s Michael Jackson game sold 2 million units on the Nintendo Wii.

I wonder how much this rather large poster cost?

Warren East, CEO of ARM, is happier than he looks here. He has 220 licensees building ARM chips. And soon, those chip makers will be building machines that run Microsoft’s Windows.

This is Paro, the therapeutic robot for patients who need a little physical interaction.

Kenmore and General Electric had booths that were near each other. They showed off internet-connected refrigerators that can use smart grid technology to figure out when is the best time to turn on their energy-consuming compressors. The time to do it is when the electricity costs the least.

The little toy on the lady’s back is a Dream Bots Whee Me portable massage robot. It applies a gentle massage and is smart enough not to fall off as it rolls back and forth.

DEMO award winner Jeff Mullen, CEO of Dynamics, showed off his company’s newfangled electronic credit cards, which can stop fraud because they have numbers that change and buttons that can be used to enter special codes. Dynamics announced a deal with Citibank, which is issuing cards using the technology this year.

Murata showed off a robot that could ride a unicycle. It was part of a larger section dedicated entirely to robots.Chris Culver of National Instruments showed that you could control a game with your eye movements.

The situation is a bit different if what is in dispute is a house. Obviously, the house cannot usually just be sold to repay a Legal Aid bill (it may be home to children) so what happens therefore is that the board will attach what is known as a "Statutory Charge" to the house in respect of monies owing. This means that when the house is sold or re-mortgaged then the Board will get their money. It is not a free loan however. Interest attaches to the charge and continues to accrue. It is rare for the board to agree to postpone their charge in the event that the house is eventually sold or is perhaps re mortgaged in the interim but they will consider it. As I stated earlier, there is no "free lunch".

Invest in some credit repair options. This process can take some time so be prepared and start as soon as possible. For as little as about per month you can retain a credit repair agency and hire them to work on your credit profile to remove 'dings and scratches.' These blemishes are hurting your credit report but the good news is that many of them can be removed. You can do a lot of this work yourself, but often times it is better and much easier to hire a team that has experience raising credit scores. Over the course of 4-12 months they can raise your credit score by more than 200 points often times.

Money Making

A report to be released from Goldman Sachs today will not only disclose some details about how the secretive firm operates and plans to change their operations in the future — as required by the Business Standards Committee established by CEO Lloyd Blankfein in response to the SEC lawsuit against the them — it "will disclose more about how it makes money," according to Bloomberg News. Of course, it will likely contain only a little bit of information to this effect, seeing as it is only 63 pages, most of which will likely be self-justifying defenses of their existing business model, and because Goldman doesn't give anything away that easily, especially not to "mollify their critics," per the Journal. If you really want to find out how Goldman makes money, you're going to have to look closely.

First, you're going to have to identify and decipher the secret code hidden within the paper, which will lead you to a map located underneath the floorboards of an out-of-the-way cabin, which will lead you to a musty castle in the basement of which sits a nervous owl with a capsule on its foot. The capsule, if you are lucky enough to soothe the owl long enough to remove it, will contain a password to a trap door, which, will lead you to an old but powerful woman who will ask you a series of questions, such as: "If you were shrunk to the size of a pencil and put in a blender, how would you get out?" After that, you must pass through an area of extreme heat, an area of extreme cold, and swim 40 lengths through a pool full of Mischievously Tickling Goldfish. Only then you will find the secret, which will be some variation of the fact that the company buys stuff cheap and sells it for more money.

You're probably reading this on junk. And I'm not talking about newsprint - industry woes aside, that's high-quality stuff. But if you're on a computer or an iPad, and you're not plugged into an Internet jack in the wall? Junk, then.

But it's not your MacBook or your tablet that's so crummy. It's the spectrum it's using.

Spectrum, in the words of FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, is the economy's "invisible infrastructure." It's the interstate system for information that travels wirelessly. It's how you get radio in your car, service on your cellphone and satellite to your television. It's also how you get WiFi.

But not all spectrum is created equal. "Beachfront spectrum" is like a well-paved road. Lots of information can travel long distances on it without losing much data. But not all spectrum is so valuable.

In 1985, there was a slice of spectrum that was too crummy for anyone to want. It was so weak that the radiation that microwaves emit could mess with it. So the government released it to the public. As long as whatever you were doing didn't interfere with what anyone else was doing, you could build on that spectrum. That's how we got garage-door openers and cordless phones. Because the information didn't have to travel far, the junk spectrum was good enough. Later on, that same section of junk spectrum became the home for WiFi - a crucial, multibillion-dollar industry. A platform for massive technological innovation. A huge increase in quality of life.

There's a lesson in that: Spectrum is really, really important. And not always in ways that we can predict in advance. Making sure that spectrum is used well is no less important than making sure our highways are used well: If the Beltway were reserved for horses, Washington would not be a very good place to do business.

But our spectrum is not being used well. It's the classic innovator's quandary: We made good decisions many years ago, but those good decisions created powerful incumbents, and in order to make good decisions now, we must somehow unseat the incumbents.

Today, much of the best spectrum is allocated to broadcast television. Decades ago, when 90 percent of Americans received their programming this way, that made sense. Today, when fewer than 10 percent of Americans do, it doesn't.

Meanwhile, mobile broadband is quite clearly the platform of the future - or at least the near future. But we don't have nearly enough spectrum allocated for its use. Unless that changes, the technology will be unable to progress, as more advanced uses will require more bandwidth, or it will have to be rationed, perhaps through extremely high prices that make sure most people can't use it.

The FCC could just yank the spectrum from the channels and hand it to the mobile industry. But it won't. It fears lawsuits and angry calls from lawmakers. And temperamentally, Genachowski himself is a consensus-builder rather than a steamroller.

Instead, the hope is that current owners of spectrum will give it up voluntarily. In exchange, they'd get big sacks of money. If a slice of spectrum is worth billions of dollars to Verizon but only a couple of million to a few aging TV stations - TV stations that have other ways to reach most of those customers - then there should be enough money in this transaction to leave everyone happy.

At least, that's some people's hope. Some advocates want that spectrum - or at least a substantial portion of it - left unlicensed. Rather than using telecom corporations such as Verizon to buy off the current owners of the spectrum, they'd like to see the federal government take some of that spectrum back and preserve it as a public resource for the sort of innovation we can't yet imagine and that the big corporations aren't likely to pioneer - the same as happened with WiFi. But as of yet, that's not the FCC's vision for this. Officials are more worried about the mobile broadband market. They argue (accurately) that they've already made more beachfront spectrum available for unlicensed uses. And although they don't say this clearly, auctioning spectrum to large corporations gives them the money to pay off the current owners. But even so, they can't do that.

"Imagine someone was given property on Fifth Avenue 50 years ago, but they don't use it and can't sell it," says Tim Wu, a law professor at Harvard and author of "The Master Switch." That's the situation that's arisen in the spectrum universe. It's not legal for the FCC to run auctions and hand over some of the proceeds to the old owners. That means the people sitting on the spectrum have little incentive to give it up. For that to change, the FCC needs Congress to pass a law empowering it to compensate current holders of spectrum with proceeds from the sale.

One way - the slightly demagogic way - to underscore the urgency here is to invoke China: Do you think it's letting its information infrastructure stagnate because it's a bureaucratic hassle to get the permits shifted? I rather doubt it.

Of course, we don't want the Chinese system. Democracy is worth some red tape. But if we're going to keep a good political system from becoming an economic handicap, there are going to be a lot of decisions like this one that need to be made. Decisions where we know what we need to do to move the economy forward, but where it's easier to do nothing because there are powerful interests attached to old habits. The problem with having a really good 20th century, as America did, is that you've built up a lot of infrastructure and made a lot of decisions that benefit the industries and innovators of the 20th century. But now we're in the 21st century, and junk won't cut it anymore.

Maybe it's just us, but it feels like most of the cases when the Wall Street Journal does a big story on the web, it's to darkly warn us about the nefarious consequences of sharing information online.

For a change, the WSJ's Digits blog has a pretty cool post up by Outreach Editor Zach Seward where he tracks his social media use and what it teaches him about himself.

Highlights include his Foursquare history and mapping it to online census data, using Mint to track his spending, Last.fm to track his music listening habits and Google for his search history (surprisingly, there's seasonal variation!).

Seward correctly points out that many of the things we use social media to do, like personal finance, are much older than the web -- the web simply makes it all efficient. And he also points out that the reason this data is available is because we opt in to sharing it, and that this brings benefits.

Good stuff.

foreclosure

Obviously for REO there will be two peaks. The first was in late 2008 and largely private-label securities and subprime, and the 2nd will probably be in 2011 and be heavily GSE REOs.

The height of the 2nd peak depends on the number of foreclosures, and the how quickly the lenders can sell the REOs. The foreclosure-gate related moratoriums have slowed the foreclosure process, but foreclosures will probably pick up again in early 2011. My guess is the 2nd peak will happen in 2011 and be close to the same height as in 2008.

One of the key issues is the number of delinquent loans (and loans in the foreclosure process). I use the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) quarterly data and LPS Applied Analytics monthly data to track delinquencies.

Click on graph for larger image in graph gallery.

This graph based on the MBA quarterly data shows the percent of loans delinquent by days past due. The MBA reported that 13.52 percent of mortgage loans were either one payment delinquent or in the foreclosure process in Q3 2010 (seasonally adjusted). This was down from 14.42 percent in Q2 2010.

Most of the decline in the overall delinquency rate was in the seriously delinquent categories (90+ days or in foreclosure process). Part of the reason is lenders were being more aggressive in foreclosing in Q3 (before the foreclosure pause) - hence the surge in REO inventory in the first graphs! Some of the decline was probably related to modifications too.

This graph provided by LPS Applied Analytics shows the percent delinquent, percent in foreclosure, and total non-current mortgages through November.

The percent in the foreclosure process is trending up because of the foreclosure moratoriums.

According to LPS, 9.02% of mortgages are delinquent (down from 9.29% in October), and another 4.08% are in the foreclosure process (up from 3.92% in October) for a total of 13.10%.

With falling house prices, the delinquency rate could start rising again since more homeowners will have negative equity. However just because a homeowner has negative equity doesn't mean they will default. It usually takes another factor such as loss of employment, divorce, or a medical emergency for the homeowner to default.

On the other hand, an improving labor market will help push down the delinquency rate. My guess is the overall delinquency rate has peaked, although I expect the delinquency rate to stay elevated for some time.

Ten Questions:

• Question #1 for 2011: House Prices

• Question #2 for 2011: Residential Investment

• Question #3 for 2011: Delinquencies and Distressed house sales

• Question #4 for 2011: U.S. Economic Growth

• Question #5 for 2011: Employment

• Question #6 for 2011: Unemployment Rate

• Question #7 for 2011: State and Local Governments

• Question #8 for 2011: Europe and the Euro

• Question #9 for 2011: Inflation

• Question #10 for 2011: Monetary Policy

The Massachusetts Supreme Court issued a major decision against the banks on the issue of foreclosure fraud earlier today. In US Trust vs. Ibanez, the court ruled that the banks in the case did not have standing to foreclose when they failed to assign the mortgage prior to foreclosure. The case carries significant implications, as many foreclosures may be declared invalid in Massachusetts, and the ruling could influence other state courts. The decision has already sent bank stocks down.

Now that the Massachusetts Supreme Court has identified a fundamental problem with the mortgage securitization and foreclosure process, Wall Street bankers and their friends in Washington may also have a harder time working hand in glove to stamp out the foreclosure fraud firestorm.

Last October, when foreclosure fraud started capturing national headlines, the Obama administration joined the banks' PR offensive and helped spin illegal foreclosure as a minor clerical issue. At a critical point in the process, White House adviser David Axelrod appeared on Face the Nation to say that he regretted that there was "uncertainty" in the housing market, that the administration was working closely with financial institutions, and that they hoped the issue would be resolved quickly.  He also said that the administration opposed a nationwide moratorium due to the fact that some foreclosures were valid.

At the time, Yves Smith said that the comments revealed "astonishing" priorities on the part of the Obama administration.

We do not know whether Bank of America wrote Axelrod's talking points, but we do know that he was partying with the bank's top public relations strategist a few days later. Axelrod attended an epilepsy research fundraiser in Boston later that week that was co-chaired by Bank of America executive Anne Finucane. The other co-chair, along with Finucane's husband? Axelrod's wife, Susan, a co-founder of Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy. Other prominent attendees are listed here.

In one picture from the event, David is standing next to an amused Finucane, a huge, clownish smile on his face, trademark mustache and brow in full effect, with one arm extended as if he is about to shake the hand of the photographer.

Obama's point man on foreclosure fraud could not possibly look like a bigger corporate tool, arm in arm with Bank of America's top public relations strategist at the height of the foreclosure fraud mess.

The "foreclosure fraud as inconsequential clerical error" argument has always been spin meant to mislead the public, put forward by Wall Street with help from government cronies like David Axelrod. Zero Hedge calls these folks the "kleptocratic banker mafia syndicate," and they come together at events like the Axelrod-Finucane fundraiser to further strengthen their social ties. But did they forget to invite the judge?

When the foreclosure fraud scandal hits the front pages again, and threatens to hurt powerful financial institutions -- rather than just the foreclosed, unemployed, and powerless -- will the syndicate keep pushing the paperwork canard? Will Obama dispatch another Wall Street flack to the Sunday circuit, to say that the issue needs to be resolved quickly? And will talking points matter when court cases keep piling up?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
